About The Archives

If you already know your way around the place, then obviously you can just start clicking away on the archive links in the sidebar. The following text is a bit of a primer for people who haven't followed my blog for the last few years. Though I'm probably going to make it seem more confusing than it really is.

When I started this blog, it was called "Not Enough Of Me" and I ran it off of a Geocities account, adding each blog entry to the HTML file by hand. In February of 2001 I started using Blogger, and in April of 2001 I moved the site to its current URL and retitled the weblog "Do You Feel Loved?", and that name has stuck ever since. Sometimes I regret giving up the "Not Enough Of Me" name, because c'mon, that's an awesome weblog title. But what's done is done.

Things only started getting tricky when I started getting all ambitious. After brief experimentation with the format in 2002 (those entries are now lost to the world, but you missed very little), which was also the year that I switched to Movable Type, I made the decision (in February of 2003) to split the weblog up into several component blogs, which were then recombined onto the mainpage through some not-terribly-clever server-side includes into one gigantic blog dashboard packed with useless information. So the weblog suddenly encompassed the primary blog, which was devoted exclusively to personal journal-style entries; the mediablog, devoted entirely to commenting on my cultural intake, which I titled "Ordinary Addictions"; the linkslog, composed of links to interesting Web detritus with little or no explanatory text and published under the heading "World In Motion"; and a photolog, bundling themed photographs together in album-style entries. It was initially called "Photographs Of Fancy Tricks," but since that was horrendously contrived it quickly wound up just being called "the photolog." And yes, those were all derived from song lyrics, and no, you don't win a prize for figuring out which songs.

The mediablog was the first casualty of my laziness and my authorial over-reach, sputtering out four months later. The linkslog continued on for a bit, then vanished for a while, and was then resurrected (with a switch to Movable Type) in mid-2004 for another equally lackluster run (though it was the trigger for the current blog setup, which is designed to allow me to easily post interesting links without having to think of a whole blog entry that justifies them). The photolog chugged slowly along through all of this, at a rate of approximately one entry a month, until Flickr came onto the scene and made the hassle of maintaining a Movable Type photolog seem very pointless indeed.

Anyway, now you know why there are all these weird, vestigial archives in the sidebar of this page, and you'll know what the hell I'm talking about if you come across a reference to one or another of those miniblogs somewhere in the regular archives. And if you'd like to see the photolog archives, just visit the main photos page -- they're all listed there -- but any new photos I choose to share with the world are on my Flickr photo page, which has its own archiving and browsing system that you should be able to figure out without my help.

Just remember when browsing the blog archives that anything generated by Blogger (i.e. pre-September 2002) is in a different design from what you're currently looking at -- namely, the design the blog had when I made the switch from Blogger to Movable Type. (It was a popular look, cribbing from a bunch of my favorite comic books, so I'm sure people are happy that I've preserved a little bit of it.) That means that navigational links on those pages may not take you where you want to go -- so when in doubt, just click your browser's back button until you know where you are again. I may set up some redirect scripts that will make basic navigation through them easily, but as per usual, don't count on me for anything.

Search The Archives

So how do you find the needles in this barnyard of disorderly haystacks? Use the search function. By default, all of the search boxes included on the various pages of the site (keep your eyes open, you'll see them) will search all of the Movable Type-powered blogs I've kept; this page, however, is the only place to go if you'd like to target your search to one blog or another. Keep in mind that this form only searches the Movable Type blogs; anything I did with Blogger is excluded, meaning you won't get pre-September 2002 results from the main blog, nor will you be able to search the first version of the linkslog. My apologies, and maybe I'll implement a full Google search function on the site eventually.
