The story of Comic Sans from the guy who created it. Recommended reading, as in order to truly hate something, one must know it intimately.

Note to self: Install this.

I want to go see "Is It Really So Strange?", the documentary about Morrissey's Latino fans in L.A., on Feb. 26th. Anyone else?

EH? QUOI? PARDON? So the Pumpkins apparently *are* getting back together (though with Auf Der Maur rather than D'arcy, it would seem). Whoa.

Depeche Mode, Smashing Pumpkins (!), Portishead, White Stripes, Strokes, Gorillaz, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Underworld, Massive Attack, etc. etc. Not confirmed but still, damn. I think I wanna go this year.

Oh for fuck's sake, Fox has scheduled the last four episodes of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT to air all in one night -- the night of the opening ceremonies for the Winter Olympics. In TV-speak, that means "FUCK YOU, YOU STUPID SHOW."

Awesome Netflix-queue management software. I don't have that many movies in my queue, but this does let you sequence them in a far more flexible way than the website interface does.
01.14.2006 | Marked For Life
>> This is the kind of question I'd normally post to Ask MetaFilter, but I've already used up my weekly question there. So, in continuing with the browser-bitching from earlier this month: I have my bookmarks exactly the way I want them in Firefox on my laptop (more specifically, in the G4-optimized Firefox build of Deer Park). It's obviously easy to network two Macs on our wireless network, so is there any simple way to get the bookmarks from that computer to be duplicated on my iMac (which is using the G5-optimized build of Firefox)? I feel like there's got to be a way, but I don't know what it would be.
Thank you, Lazyweb...
UPDATE: Actually, that was way easier than I'd expected. Never mind, everybody.

Levi's is going to release jeans with built-in iPod pocket, dock connection, and controls. Insane. I think I might kind of want them.

The Flip4Mac plugin that allows WMV files to be viewable in Quicktime is now free. W00T.

Makers of DrawerBoxes, long boxes for comic books with built-in drawers instead of lids, eliminating the hassle of stacking boxes on top of others you want to get to. Clever. When I have an apartment big enough to keep floppy comics in, I'll buy these.

Titled SHOW YOUR BONES, released on March 27th (UK). First single: "Gold Lion." A nine-year-old came up with the title -- it's what happens when you stick your finger in a light socket. Awesome. I've been really wanting a new YYY album...

It is now a federal crime to anonymously annoy someone on the Internet. Seriously. Consequently, the Internet is being turned off on Friday. Hit up Amazon, quick.

How to self-publish comic books. It is obviously not easy.

Pulls up three random panels from three random Garfield strips. Can produce oddly hilarious results.

I am officially in Financial Austerity Mode until I can afford one of these things. I would happily sell my old Powerbook G4 and my four-month-old iMac (which has been obsoleted TWICE since August) in order to get one. (It is a stupid name, though.)

Surprise! JT Leroy was a scam. I never read any of the books, but from the moment I first heard about "him" I thought it all sounded suspiciously fictitious and a lot like some kind of sociological experiment...

Interesting poached-scrambled-eggs recipes. Not sure I'm nimble enough to do it, but might be worth experimenting with -- and that soup sounds really good.

Founder Adam Kuban is both a nice fellow and a worthy Mario Kart opponent (met him this weekend). And yes, Fornino was delicious.

Interesting article about the gay heritage of 2 Columbus Circle, recently rejected for landmark designation. I am curious to see what the Design Museum's gonna do with it...
01.08.2006 | A Pain That I'm Used To
>> My throat hurts, and I can't tell if that's because I'm getting sick, or because I fell asleep in a weird position playing Mario Kart DS and ended up sleeping with my mouth open and most likely snoring really loudly and totally raping my throat in the process.
I'm aware how sad the above sentence is, yes. And yes, this is the first time I've actually fallen asleep playing Mario Kart, so don't go thinking I have a problem or something. OK? I CAN STOP ANYTIME!
(Actually, I probably can stop anytime, since I just finally finished Mirror Mode a couple hours ago at the laundromat, and God knows I'm never gonna play all the missions. But whatever, s'all good, I'm not addicted. Really. :::scratches arm nervously, goes shifty-eyed:::)

01.05.2006 | Ridiculous Bullshit Whining About Geekery
>> I will never find a web browser that truly loves me.
I've decided that I'd prefer to be using Safari, principally because it's hands-down the fastest and nimblest of the Mac browsers. The problem is, Firefox has just two features I can't live without -- the del.icio.us plugin (which adds the My Links and Post buttons to the higher-level function buttons) and the little separators in bookmark-bar pulldown folders, without which my giant lists of bookmarks just look friggin' ugly. I decided tonight, however, that I'd be able to live without both of these features if I could just import my bookmarks from Firefox, since there's a lot of them and it'd be a huge fucking ass-pain to manually re-enter them into Safari. But of friggin' COURSE Safari doesn't support importing bookmarks from anything other than Internet Explorer, and even that is a one-time deal that you have to dick around in the plist file to get to happen again, and even though I tried some trickery with exporting bookmarks from Camino (which, BTW, kinda sucks -- so slow!) into Internet Explorer so that they'd then be transferrable into Safari, I had no success.
If somebody would just write a proper del.icio.us plugin for Safari, my life would be beautiful. Those little bookmarklets just don't do it for me... plus, it drives me crazy that the Javascript bookmarklet for posting doesn't ever load the del.icio.us favicon. (Yes, it looks like aesthetics and appearance are my #1 browser criteria. What's it to you?) Firefox feels a bit like a compromise, as it's just not sleek and speedy enough to satisfy me, but I guess I'm going to have to learn to live with it.

Something to keep an eye on -- absolutely gorgeous-looking IMAP webmail project -- an alternative to Squirrelmail, which is what my Dreamhost webmail runs on. Only in alpha, but worth watching.

A piece on Brian Michael Bendis' run on DAREDEVIL from Salon, which is interesting in and of itself. I've actually been meaning to read this run.

Extensions for Camino, should I indeed install it tonight

Now this might be seriously useful, as I generally use Amazon to find album art and I don't like having fully-automated programs do it for me. (Many of these links today are from hicksdesign.co.uk, so thank you!)
-
Also to be played with, as I adore the Firefox del.icio.us plugin but there's nothing quite as good for Safari or Camino
-
Also found via hicksdesign, also to be played with. I've got a lot of geekery to explore in the next couple of days.

For exporting OS X's Address Book vCards to Thunderbird and/or Gmail. Hurrah.

Mmm... mac and cheese. A dish I myself should be experimenting with more often. (Best I've had so far: The Hudson Cafeteria.)

01.04.2006 | We're Very Self-Centered
>> OK, so I just saw it last night (God bless you, DVR), but how good was the most recent Arrested Development? Off the top of my head:
- Structureless new-age feel-goodery
- The OC disorder (Don't call it that)
- The HBO's not going to want us
- The 3-D tomato chuck
- Hot ham water
- Do you know the muffin man?
- Bob Loblaw Lobs Law Bomb
- Somebody wanted a boyfriend
- Emmett Richter
- The live feed
- Please tell your friends about this show
