WORDS | Books I Need To Read
Thursday, April 03, 2003

Just for the sake of getting it out of my system, here's an incomplete list of books I want to read. I plan to keep it updated, so as I think of new things and cross off old ones, I'll edit this entry (keeping score of how many I've knocked off, of course). And yes, the comments are active, so you can feel free to scream "HOW can you not have read XXXXXXX?!? It's a SIN!" Make me feel stupid, please, I like it. ;-D

This list is excessively proper and canonical, I know, but I still feel like I have an obligation as someone who plays with words to see how the folks that impressed people did it. Try not to savage me for being an ivory-tower academic, and I'll try not to be snobbish and say you only read crap. That should work out, right?

Dude, I just finished To The Lighthouse. It's fucking great. Just make sure you have absolute calm, silence, and isolation to read it--it's slow reading and you really need to not breeze through it, but I'll be damned if the Time Passes section isn't the most efficient, interesting, and potent 18 pages of prose I've read in eons. Highest recommendation.

Confederacy of Dunces and Me Talk Pretty One Day must go to the top of that list right fucking now. Also, Portrait of the Artist and Catcher In the Rye aren't worth a re-read, but Lord Of the Flies totally is. Also, if you haven't read any or have just read A Doll House, you need some Ibsen on that list of plays. I recommend Ghosts, Hedda Gabler, and The Wild Duck (although a lot of people hate The Wild Duck).

That's me speaking authoritatively on something I know basically nothing about.
