Do You Feel Loved?
Comments on Entry: Evil Heat

Dude, if you're gonna get an AC unit, go get it now. For one thing, it's Memorial Day and it'll probably be on sale, and for another, come a month from now, you're either not going to find one anywhere or you'll be gouged for it since everyone will want one. It was like that in NJ with water pumps... once April came around and half the towns started flooding, suddenly water pumps wee nowhere to be found. Thus began the great Home Depot riots of 2003.

AJP above is right. Same thing happens in Boston. Gotta get one now when people aren't really thinking about it, or H. Depot will be sold out and won't have them again until September. You are fore-warned. I have suffered through this...

Round these here parts, we had a scorching sumer in '03 (well, admittedly, scorching by our standards, i.e. in the high 90s or low 100s.) As AC is not yet a habit here, we all just got fans. Every single store in town had stacks of them - but sold them out in a few hours, with no possibility of restocking because these things are apparently to be ordered six months in advance. So, not to be taken unawares, last year they ordered mountains of them in January.

We had both a perfectly average cool summer, and great sales on fans everywhere.

On another note, I have the benefit of a southwest-facing corner office, with magnificent views over two mountain ranges (OK - two really big hill ranges). "Benefit" of sorts, as obviously it gets (in April already) to 90 degrees daily, what with the sun heating all four of the office's large windows. So, year-round, I must keep the (outside) blinds down, to try to get an inside temperature around 85. So much for the view - but, if I could only get just one plant to thrive here, I'd be able to feed the Third World several times over, and then retire.

Last (then I'm gone - sorry for the blogsmog), how about thicker curtains? Might they run up less of an utility bill? Or these newfangled UV-blind, light-translucent sticky panes?

does anybody else out there have the Massive Attack singles boxed set with the awesome temperature-sensitive color-changing ink on the outside?

ha!! i do, i do! and seeing it white was the only good thing about a hot summer :P that's it, i'm getting an a/c.

Please note: After a certain period of time, all comments threads are closed and further comments cannot be added -- this is to prevent abuse of the system by spammers and trolls. I know it's obnoxious, but in this sad world it simply has to be that way. If you've got something to say about a post with disabled comments, feel free to send me an e-mail. If your comment doesn't seem to show up after you've posted it, then it may contain a word or term that's on my blacklist (another anti-spam measure); some prescription-drug names and p0rn-related terms trigger it, as does the word "socialism" (look inside of it, think about erection medication, and maybe you'll figure it out). My apologies for the inconvenience.
