03.02.2003 | Do You Have Prince Albert In A Can?

Scenes from a brief exploration of my neighborhood -- Kensington Gardens and the Albert Memorial, and the Natural History Museum -- sometime in late January...

This thing was in front of the Serpentine Gallery. It scared me quite a bit.

The Albert Memorial has four statues at each corner, representing the territories England dominated during his lifetime (which is, y'know, a bit crass, but then, Victorian England wasn't terribly P.C., now was it). This is the American statue, because, y'know, I'm American. That native American woman there is looking strangely Hellenic, don'tcha think?

The Royal Albert Hall and the Albert Memorial in extreme silhouette. Again, this one might look too dark on your monitor, so my apologies... the difference in display properties between Apple and Windows computers is fascinating.

A really badass statue based on William Blake's "The Ancient Of Days" in the entrance hall of the Earth wing of the Natural History Museum. I re-shot this one several times, but it always came out slightly blurred, as do most of these Natural History Museum photos; there just wasn't enough light. (Also, I'm a bad photographer.)

The dodo. They're extinct. It's sad.

Aww snap, they've got a dinosaur exhibition. While poking around the exhibit, I saw on display a set of plastic model dinosaurs (apparently available in the gift shop) that my parents had brought back for me from London years and years ago, when I was like six years old... it was such a nostalgia trip. I should have bought them. They were hilariously out of date in terms of the concepts they had of posture, appearance, etc., but it didn't matter, really... seeing them was quite the Madeleine cookie moment, I will say.

An animatronic Tyrannosaurus Rex. He would've been more convincing if he didn't have to turn off every couple of minutes to recharge...

Every Natural History Museum has a giant fiberglass blue whale. I think it's legally mandated. But for some reason, when I looked at this one I had one of those brain-melting "Oh my God, they're so fucking big... nature is so fucking amazing" moments to the point where I actually had to sit down and ponder it for a second. What a beautiful, beautiful animal... cue a week of dreams about swimming with one.

The unbelievably ornate facade of the Natural History Museum (I came in the back way, off Exhibition Row, and didn't see this until I left).

Comments.

you are too modest you are a very good photographer, and your commentary was quite hilarious, especially your brain melting moment
i live in london and have been to the natural history museum a few times, but your pictures made me see it differently, in a good way
i always intend because of the entrance to go in through the front and because as i always come out of the tube station at a different entrance i often have to wander round a bit
Anyway great photos and commentary
