Snapshots from my final weeks in London. As photographs they're not my finest work, but as documents they're invaluable... late April-early May 2003.
I really wanted to see Canary Wharf. Mainly because it's where a crucial
Invisibles scene takes place, admittedly, but also because I figured it would be cool. And it was, visually at least. This is the escalator out of the (massive) Tube station.
Yep, that's the Millennium Dome. Not the most scenic overlook possible, but whatever. It's currently closed to the public, and the government of London is getting their collective panty in a twist over what to do with the damn thing; meanwhile, it's costing some outrageous sum of money each day to keep it in decent condition... it's regarded as a fiasco of unbelievable proportions, and it didn't turn out to be quite the cap-feather Tony Blair might've hoped.
On the way back from Canary Wharf,
Cameron insisted on doing a
phoon in the middle of King's Cross Station. Who am I to deny him his little pleasures?
This is the back of Charleston House, the country home of the Bloomsbury Group, which we visited on the way out to Brighton. Tiny little place, but it stuck with me nonetheless... the room on the other side of those windows was one of the loveliest spaces I'd ever been in, all crammed with paintings and art supplies and flooded with light, even on a crappy cloudy day like this one. Striking.
And here's the pier in Brighton. Uhh, wheeeeeeee.
A disco-ball weathervane. HOT.
They actually have roller coasters on that thing. You see, the British have no word for "rickety falling-down piece of crap" in their language, so they don't concern themselves about such matters...
These are the grounds of the outrageously opulent Royal Pavillion. I should've taken pictures inside, but I was nice and obeyed the rules. Which was stupid. If you're ever in Brighton, then (a.) I'm sorry and (b.) you do need to go to the Royal Pavillion, it's a more than worthwhile trip.
Kickin' it suntan-style on Brighton's ever-so-comfy shoreline. *sigh*
