I flew straight out of London to Miami (nine. hour. flight. Dear Jesus), to meet my family for a celebration of my brother's graduation from the University of Miami Medical School. The sudden switch between loneliness, grey skies and another world to beaches, family, and a place that feels like home was... indescribable. We stayed for three days total before shuffling off back home to the west coast. The pictures ain't great, but the times sure were. May 9th-11th, 2003...
The view from the first room we stayed in (we were shuffled out of it ten minutes after this photo due to a defective toilet). When I don't live near water, I go insane... no wonder I spent so much time by the Thames in London.
The lights in the hallway. Here begins a long string of "It's fun to take pictures of EVERY GODDAMN THING I SEE" photos that you are thankfully not being subjected to (largely).
My niece, McKenna, in action.
I like this one because it looks like a promo shot for the strangest band ever.
Aaaand she's off again.
Biscayne Bay, from my parents' room.
Cool glass ball things in the hotel bar.
The lobby. My mom said that years ago, when they first came to Miami, their travel agent wouldn't let them book any place without a spectacular lobby. She said that was the whole point of Miami hotels. She might have been right.
Well, I thought it was kinda cool.
From my brother's graduation ceremony. It was pretty dark in there, so these are very blurry.
Michael J. Fox was the commencement speaker; his speech was pretty damn good.
The vast majority of our time in Miami was spent here, at the hotel's pool. After the gloom of London, the ecstasy of going swimming again in bright, cheerful sunlight was unimaginable.
The striking facade of the hotel.
That's me. Looking like a drowned rat. And apparently I've gotten a blinkie, too (It was really, really bright out there).
The giant pile of desserts at the hotel's Mother's Day brunch. Sadly, they all included unnecessary fruit, which drove me nuts. I am
such a picky eater.
And here we are getting our tire fixed in Naples after coming off Alligator Alley. What a weekend, what an end.
